At the top stands a striking winged figure representing Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. In her right hand, she holds a laurel crown, symbolizing victory, while her left hand holds a broken chain, representing freedom from Spanish rule.
Although commonly called El Ángel, the figure is actually a representation of Victory rather than an angel.
